View Full Version : Xzibit's An Indie Again...

Xzibit has pimped his career.

With Full Circle, due October 17, the rapper is six records deep, but he feels brand new. "Not only because the audience is broader," X explained, referring to his "Pimp My Ride" fans, "but because of the energy. The way that I'm coming out on this record, it feels like a rebirth. A lot of the politics and bullsh-- that went behind making so many records in the past don't exist anymore."

In other words, Xzibit has cut ties with his former label and gone back to being an indie rapper (with Koch distributing Full Circle).

"I took a strong stand to get away from Sony Records," X explained, detailing how he believes the label failed to promote his two most recent releases. "I sold 2 million records on Loud, which was one-tenth of the size of Sony [2000's Loud release Restless has been certified platinum by the RIAA]. Going over to Sony, they can only push my records to gold [500,000 shipped]. And I'm not going to sit here and believe it was the music. It was the people behind the music.

"So I refused to put another record on there and that's where 'Pimp My Ride,' film and television and everything came from," he continued. "I'm going to show you that I can do something else. We had to pull some strings to get off of Sony ... so I'm taking this as an opportunity to not let music run me. I run the music. I reorganized, rearranged some things — and man, it is so much better."

A spokesperson for Columbia Records did not return a request for comment.

As an independent artist, X has never worked harder on an album, but he believes the reward will be much better, creatively and monetarily. "It's a difference between 15 cents a record or 7 dollars or 8 dollars a record," he said.

To assist in making Full Circle, Xzibit enlisted Keith Shocklee of the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy, Ice Cube) to co-executive produce, and friends like the Game, DJ Quik, T-Pain, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, King Tee, Donell Rawlings and Jelly Roll to contribute production or guest spots.

Longtime collaborator Rick Rock produced the first single, "Concentrate," which samples a Buddhist chant. "It has a lot to do with tranquility, with having peacefulness and everything coming together, moving in one motion," X said. "I think that was the feel to this whole album. Not to get religious on anybody, but it was a good element to provide for the first single."

Full Circle is full of classic Xzibit boast tracks, but it also goes in a few more serious directions. On "Black and Brown," for instance, he addresses the tension between Latinos and African-Americans in Los Angeles, much like Snoop Dogg's "Vato" does (see "Snoop Reclaims His Old Doggystyle, Goes Gangsta For 'Vato' Video").

"I come to this with some experience, because I had altercations with Latin dudes," he said. "I could have come with, 'Man, f--- this, we can perpetuate the cycle.' Or I can sit back and show a different perspective, show a different sign of something that is learned with maturity and learned with some kind of sense about yourself."

On "Rampart Division," Xzibit raps from the perspective of police officers working some of L.A.'s most dangerous neighborhoods. "We got to say, 'F--- the police,' but now we get to hear what the police have to say back to us," X said. "I actually didn't even have to do any research, because as crazy as the song sounds, I actually just took real things that happen in the news. It's not like I'm making it up.

"When the flak comes — 'cause I know you're all coming — when it actually falls on me, all I got to do is just point out places that it actually happened," he said.

I don't know why they're writin' "back". "Full Circle" will be his first independent release, all the other LPs were major.

The Buddhist chant "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" would take me some time to explain the fullness of, one very short way to explain it would be to say "devotion to the mysic law of cause and effect" a more full explanation but still abrigded link: http://sgi-usa.org/buddhism/faqs/nmrk.htm

Nichiren taught that all of the benefits of the wisdom contained in the Lotus Sutra can be realized by chanting its title [Nam] Myoho Renge Kyo. Chanting these words and excerpts from the Lotus Sutra is the core of this Buddhist practice, supported by study and the propagation of teachings. Faith, practice and study are the basics of the Buddhist practice, pursuing activities for oneself and activities for the sake of others.

When all of this is said, i am a little bit uncertain to how i feel about xzibit's use of this chant in his music, it really shines through that xzibit does not really know the depth of what he is using in his music, but musically i can see that the chant works.. it really brings power to the song, but it is a sword that is sharp on both sides, one side it makes the song powerful on the other it reveals so openly the shallowness on xzibits lyrics..

TO PAINT A PICTURE - IT IS LIKE STANDING NEXT TO MARTIN LUTHER KING AND GHANDI - TALKING ABOUT B**CH*S AND H**S

now i do not know if the monk portrayed in the video is real,
but if he is, i would find it so sad, because it is so disrespectful,
and not at all representative for the correct practice of nichiren buddhism..
and i hold him partially responsible for misguiding xzibit and making him look rather foolish..

Ahh the first of many buddhist to hit the forums, i was wondering why it took so long for someone to complain haha.

Your religion is your religion i guess, im not gonna touch this one coz i know i'll disrespect someone, somehow - but really, in the great scheme of life is it really that important that some musician sampled a buddhist chant? I'm sure other chants have been sampled before.

Oh and lets wait and see how many people covert to buddhism or spend the time to look into what being a buddhist is all about after they google the chant... what will you say to the people who want to practice buddhism after they heard the chant and did some research about the religion?

Are they going to be turned away?

THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!

FINALLY, Treble has brought it together for me in a nutshell. I am not a Buddhist but in the post, I can fully understand why I did not and still don't like the chant in the song. The lyrics did not match the chant, simply put. ON FRIGGIN' POINT with the line about MLK and Gandi. Could not have worded it better myself. And now with the video's release, it is even worse.

I deciphered the lyrics and I just could not make heads nor tails. It has no flow, no continuity and no point. It's not a criticism on Xzibit's use of a Buddhist chant, it's is questioning of what's the relation to the lyrics more than anything. Where's is the "tranquility" in "you might arrive to soon""?

Thank you again Treble, you done did good!!

Sorry but that's my opinion and I stand like cement on/to it.

^ Its the first single on the album - it's not supposed to make sense, its not supposed to be the best track ever - its supposed to appeal to the masses. So he talks about everything and anything...

The first single goes out to make your money back, then everything from there is all gravy. Second single will be heat though, whatever it is. My guess anyways.

Treble - I read the fisrt link you left to get a grasp on the Nam Myoho Renge Kyo and it's meaning. I have been educated. I even bookmarked for future use.

Eagerly awaiting second single.

i am not upset or angry, and definately not with X , because to my knowlegde he is not a buddhist.. and i agree on that musically the chant makes the song very powerful.. and it is in the spirit of hip-hop to sample/absorb everything it can get its hands on - and in this perspective it is nothing special about this song.. and for most people it is just a powerful sound..

now wayne shorther, herbie hancock, jessica williams, tina turner, maxi jazz of faihtless all happen to be practising nicheren buddhists..

now about the chant and people who google it,
i have thought about that too,
and ofcourse for some people it will offer an oppurtunity to get to know about something new and ofcourse people will not get tured away due to how they came to learn about something...

so my main issue is not with X but more with the priest/monk who should know better as far as i am concerned... still i cannot change the actions of others but i can chose how i wish to respond to them. So i am not angry, but i feel compelled to address this usage of chanting, and give more insight into what it is, looking after the dignity of my religion, and hopefully being well spoken enough not to offend but rather being a catalyst for productive dialouge..

Treble - Thanks for more insight. I was going to Google it but I had to move a site and totally forgot. Anyway, at least you aren't angry, you are informing. You could have come in with a whole different vibe. Education comes in many, many forms. I appreciate the effort.

I will wait to hear more on what he has to say about it as I am sure this is going to be questioned loads in the future. MTV2 in 2 (days).
