Xzibit Launches Production/Management Division Of His Open Bar Entertainment

Rapper, actor and producer Alvin ‘Xzibit’ Joiner has launched production and management divisions at his music label Open Bar Entertainment and has signed with ICM Partners across the board.

Joining OBE is manager-producer Eric Skinner, who most recently was at Primary Wave Entertainment where he represented Xzibit. Skinner will head up film and television development as well as the company’s new management division with music industry veteran and company COO, Dontay Kidd.

Skinner, a former agent at ICM Partners, began his career at UTA. He transitioned to management in 2012 when he joined Intellectual Artist Management and segued to Primary Wave Entertainment in 2015, following Primary Wave’s acquisition of IAM. I hear there were conversations about launching Open Bar’s production/management operations as a joint venture with PWE’s backing though they did not result in a deal. The new division is being financed by Xzibit and Skinner who continues to have a working relationship with former PWE managers, co-managing clients together.

Kidd comes from a background in video production and music management, overseeing album releases and world tours with then rapper client, The Game.

Founded in 2001, Open Bar was originally launched as a joint venture imprint with Loud Records to release Xzibit’s projects and sign new talent. Since its inception, OBE has sold over 5 million records worldwide. The company has a slate of music-driven projects across film, television and digital, including a soon-to-be-announced directing vehicle for Xzibit and a reality concept centered around troubled urban youth. In the studio, Xzibit is currently producing records with new label artists James Savage (aka Jayo Felony) and Benz Shelton, with an album of his own also on the way.

“It has been an exceptional journey getting to this point in my career,” Xzibit said. “With all of my experience in music, film and television, partnering with ICM is a key piece to moving forward. OBE is pro-artist, and inspired by the next generation ready to break out in this exciting new landscape.”

As an actor, Xzibit recently wrapped a three-year stint on the popular Fox series Empire and was last seen in the Netflix feature Sun Dogs. His other feature credits include Werner Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant, Sony’s Gridiron Gang and xXx: State of the Union for Columbia.

Xzibit To Guest Star On FOX TV Show ‘Empire’

Xzibit is bringing his acting talents to Empire. Mr. X To The Z, born Alvin Joiner, will be appearing on the FOX drama as a rival to Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard).

Deadline reports that:

Xzibit will star as Leslie “Shyne” Johnson aside Terrence Howard’s polarizing character, Lucious. The rapper will embody a music mogul with a close ear to the streets. “Shyne” also has resentment towards Lucious after getting blackballed for his lifestyle. Leslie “Shyne” Johnson is 100% wolf and 100% gangster. He has managed artists, started record imprints and even sold a few units here and there, but his bread and butter always has been — much to his years-long frustration — drugs, guns and extortion. Feeling shut out by the other heavy hitters in the music industry, he carries a big chip on his shoulder, especially for Lucious.

New Music: Back Up Off Me – Bishop Lamont (Ft. Xzibit & Kaleb Simmonds)

Just days after a standout feature for Koache, Xzibit does it again. The platinum MC gets down with Bishop Lamont, who is a fellow Dr. Dre affiliate of the mid-2000s. “Back Up Off Me” is a single from Lamont’s perceived 2016 debut, The Reformation.

As the title suggests, the record—featuring singer Kaleb Simmonds—is about pushing others for much needed room. X opens things up with a raspy and rowdy verse, talking like he did on his first two solo LPs. Bishop comes in next, showing why he caught the ear of Dre as well as Caltroit in the last decade. This is hard-nosed Hip-Hop that combines B-Boy pride with street-tested bravado.

New Music: Koache – Turn Me Back (Ft. Xzibit)

Xzibit and Nottz go back. On the acclaimed 2000 LP Restless, the Virginia producer/MC shared a track with Dr. Dre in “U Know.” X-to-the-Z and Nottz Raw would work again on the first Serial Killers project a couple years ago. This time, the V-A to C-A link surrounds Los Angles, California rapper Koache.

“Turn Me Back” is a song warning haters and testers against making people revert to their old ways of handling things. Both X’ and Nottz are 20-plus-year veterans who have stayed evolving and refuse to be dragged down. Based on this groovy track, and Xzibit’s fighting feature verse, this is a great pathway for Koache.

Game Point, Koache’s forthcoming album (March 8), features more than half the songs produced by Nottz.
