Xzibit Interviewed by AllHipHop: Talks Empire TV Show, West Coast Hip-Hop & More…

Xzibit Interview @ AllHipHop

AllHipHop chopped it up with the Cali King on his views on Hip-Hop, Hollywood and the great strides he’s made in his career:

Xzibit has seen some of the highest highs Hip-Hop could possibly offer. That notion is quite literal and as well as metaphorical. During his powerful run in rap, Xzibit used to rocked with inebriated icons such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem as well as underground legends like Tha Liks and King Tee. But, never mistake his affiliations with a lack of ability to stand alone. Lyrically, X to tha Z came forth with a West Coast perspective that was completely unique, chock full of lyrics and hard raps.

His ability to forge ahead without his old running mates is exemplified with his present status. Unlike the lot of them, Xzibit has transitioned nicely into a thespian that has appeared in “The X-Files,” “Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden” and now “Empire.” His role as “Shyne” is a sinister nemesis to Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) has captivated audiences.

Xzibit to Dr. Dre Detractors: ‘Do What He Did and Then Talk To Me’

Xzibit has some harsh words for detractors of Dr. Dre. Speaking to Variety at the premiere of the four-part HBO documentary “The Defiant Ones,” which explores the intersecting lives of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, Xzibit took issue with a recent dig by Chance the Rapper — Chicago’s Chance mocked Dre’s label Aftermath by calling it “Can’t Do Math Entertainment” in a graphic displayed as part of his stage show — who later apologized “to Dr. Dre and all of Aftermath for publicly disrespecting their hard work and contributions to music.”

“These people dissing Dr. Dre, they need to get off their cell phones for about a week and come back to reality,” said Xzibit. “They have no idea. Do what he did and then talk to me.”

Although Xzibit wasn’t signed to Aftermath, he was a not-too-distant peer to many on the roster, achieving success in the 90s which peaked with 1998’s “What U See Is What U Get.”

So what does he miss about the decade during which hip-hop exploded? “The diversity,” said the L.A. native. “I miss the willingness to go your own path and be original. A lot of what we see today is regurgitated. People are literally naming themselves after each other — just changing a couple letters. It’s exacerbating. As a creative, you want to see things elevate, not digress.”

Xzibit promoted to series regular for Empire Season 3

Empire fans can expect to see a lot more of Shyne Johnson in Season 3, as rapper-turned-actor Xzibit will be a series regular.

Xzibit on Empire

Fans were introduced to Xzibit’s character, Shyne Johnson, in the back half of Season 2. There are many famous people and artists that have appeared on Empire, so at first we thought that Xzibit’s role would be a brief one. However it’s now been reported that Xzibit will be a series regular in Season 3. Shyne Johnson ain’t going anywhere baby! (Unless Lucious kills him.) Shyne came into the play in the Season 2 finale, when Lucious admits to Cookie that he did a job for gangsters Tommy and Rosie while she was in prison. The only other person who knows about the hit is Shyne, whom Lucious screwed over. With Tariq and the Feds sniffing around, Lucious and Cookie know that they need to cover their bases and get Shyne on their side. This entails giving him an invite to Hakeem’s wedding, but Shyne shows up to the wedding drunk and causes a scene. Now Shyne didn’t strike us as the brightest crayon in the box, but more of Shyne’s identity is set to be revealed in Empire Season 3.
